about

I was a little hesitant to write a blurb about what this song’s about since frankly, I could go on for a while, so instead here are some quick snippets about what has been going through my head while writing this one.

1. In an article published on Bloomberg News, “Bezos is making about $321 million a day, $13.4 million an hour, $222,884 a minute, and $3,715 a second this year. The largest single-day increase in Bezos's net worth is $13 billion, which he achieved on July 20, 2020.”

2. According to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, as of October 23rd 2020, “over 8,600 fires have burned 4,317,646 acres (1,747,289 ha), more than 4% of the state's roughly 100 million acres of land, making 2020 the largest wildfire season recorded in California's modern history.”
Damage from these fires is estimated at $10 billion dollars and counting.

3. A recent article published by NBC News stated, “Lawyers appointed by a federal judge to identify migrant families who were separated by the Trump administration say that they have yet to track down the parents of 545 children and that about two-thirds of those parents were deported to Central America without their children, according to a filing Tuesday from the American Civil Liberties Union. The Trump administration instituted a "zero tolerance" policy in 2018 that separated migrant children and parents at the southern U.S. border.

4. The Miami Herald wrote and published extensive details on the Jeffrey Epstein case, but for the sake of brevity here’s a little excerpt from the Intercept; “In 2008, Acosta, then a U.S. attorney in Miami, signed off on a sweetheart non-prosecution deal with Epstein, the superrich money manager accused of sexually abusing and exploiting dozens of underage girls.” Acosta went on to become the Labour Secretary for the Trump administration until pressure from the Epstein scandal forced his resignation. While working within the administration, Acosta proposed 80% funding cuts for the government agency that combats child sex trafficking.

This song might be titled Bezos, but it’s about so much more than some dickhead billionaire who can’t even be bothered to compensate his own employees appropriately, (in the middle of a pandemic no less) when he’s making more money than ever before.

It’s about the complete lack of leadership not only in the United States (we could be here awhile going on about that one), but globally, and about questioning why we put our faith in people who show us time and time again that they don’t have any interest in improving the quality of life of the very people that make their businesses run in the first place.

Jeff Bezos alone could end world hunger today, instead, he decides to keep his own employee wages at the bare minimum required, knowing full well that that doesn’t cover the basic cost of living.

California, the Amazon, and many other forests are literally burning to the ground at an unsustainable rate, and yet we have people in positions of power who still deny climate change.

And those same people hire their friends and family members into roles they’re unqualified for, actively and unapologetically putting children at risk of abuse and sex trafficking.

In Daven Attenboroughs new documentary, Life on Our Planet, its stated that by the 2100s, "the planet will be four degrees Celsius warmer, rendering large parts of the Earth uninhabitable and leaving millions of people homeless."

We are quite literally running out of time.

I don’t have all, or any of the answers necessarily to these issue, but listen to the experts, read the news (Fox doesn’t count), and get involved in the conversation in any way you can because we can’t solve any of these alone.

Thanks for reading & listening, sorry/not sorry for the ramble.

lyrics

Lightning striking closer than ever before
Lions rumble through the skies to meet upon a shore
Sliding down the narrows from 10 mile bay
Used to mean a hurricane was coming this way

We’d stay up late to listen
Eyes wide with each crash and whistle
Now it knocks windows in the city
And I swear it’s like the second coming

Bezos hands are in your pockets as he sits on his throne
The kind of dick that needs a toilet made of solid gold

Kids don’t wanna listen, they’re drunk in the sun
It’s just like how they like them, half dressed and young

Grab the pack, light a match
Fan the smoke, it’ll catch

Then we watch it burn like the California fires
And it sweeps away everything you think you’ve earned
And Lord have mercy it goes back to the people
And you spend your days alone licking pennies til you choke

Yeah fuck the Bezos, Waltons, the Trumps
So insecure, so greedy and so dumb
Friend with rapists, pedophiles and the judge
Hiding kids in cages until they’re ripe enough

I have a dream I’d love for you to see
Before the match gets lit I get to pour the gasoline

Neither Could Dylan Vaughan, Ontario

Equipped with the casual snarkiness of fellow Canadians Treble Charger, the tranquillic and thoughtful introspection of Death Cab For Cutie and the immersive melodic stylings of Jimmy Eat World, Neither Could Dylan emerged in the summer of 2020 with an aesthetic all her own.
